TIER 4 - COMBATIVE HANDGUN
THE DSI (TIER 4) COMBATIVE HANDGUN PROGRAM is designed for serious gun owners, new or veteran, who want to quickly gain the attitude, confidence, skills, and abilities needed to dominate a lethal force encounter.
The Tier 4 Combative Handgun Program will gain you the experience needed to safely, effectively, and confidently handle your firearm under realistic conditions. The Combative Handgun Program will give you a base of real combative handgun skills you will begin to feel confident with immediately.
It will remove all doubts about your ability to operate safely and effectively in a 360-degree environment, under various lighting conditions (low and no light), teach you how to move off the line of attack, to cover, and how to use your cover to benefit you most. You will gain a real understanding of just what it takes to win a fight for life and the techniques that you can use to shape your situation in order to suit your immediate needs. Not only will this course give you the skills and training needed to dominate a lethal force confrontation, but it will also teach you how to save lives by applying critically needed first aid after the fight, which is often required before the EMTs arrive and are allowed on scene.
New gun owners can walk away from this series with extreme confidence in your new-found skills that will serve you well your entire life, paying you back with huge dividends by way of real combative skills and confidence in your ability to safely and effectively operate in a real-world environment protecting yourself, your loved ones, your business, your church, your school, and even play an effective part in your communities defense.
Veteran gun owners will appreciate new challenges, the ability to refresh skills that may have gotten rusty, learn some new skills, shoot under low/no light conditions, appreciate the ability to freely move to cover and utilize it appropriately, and gain more than a few new and valuable training experiences along the way.
Because DSI understands training we have paths forward for veteran gun owners who already have solid skills and are looking for great training groups to work with. No need to repeat modules you are already proficient in if you don’t want the additional remedial training (some do, we can appreciate that). If you're a veteran shooter, ask us how, we’re happy to help you customize a plan and forge a path forward for your continual development.
Best of all, whether you're a veteran shooter OR a new gun owner; you will be able to continue to refine those skills on a regular basis amongst a growing community of serious, but fun-loving and responsible gun owners - just like yourself.
WHAT you will learn: You will learn to safely and effectively operate and deploy your EDC handgun under realistic conditions (from your concealed holster, target ID/discrimination, low/no light, short time limits, close distances, etc.) apply skills such as maneuver (intelligent movement with a purpose), effective fire (getting first round and more hits on targets immediately), and proper use of cover (yes, there ARE ways to use cover appropriately) to dominate a lethal force confrontation.
Module 1 starts with the important fundamentals like wearing your equipment correctly, grip and stance, and how to safely, quickly, and effectively present (draw) your handgun, you will learn how to achieve fast first-round hits with the ability to control the recoil of your handgun and deliver follow-up shots as needed - all with devastating and practical combat accuracy. You will learn how to use intuitive fire for immediate problems while you lay the building blocks or extremely accurate combative sighted fire. You will begin to master the most common type of reloads and malfunction clearance you need “right now” to get back in the fight and win. You will learn to maneuver off the line of attack and move quickly to cover, and - just as importantly - use your cover appropriately (yes - there ARE inappropriate ways to use cover). Not only will you learn HOW to use basic tactical fundamentals, but you will also be given all the information in regards to WHY they work and have been adapted so you can understand and adapt them for yourself - on the fly - as your situation demands.
Most importantly, you will learn how to use the tool of dry practice to sharpen your skills while you are between courses, off the range, at home, and at your leisure, according to YOUR schedule, so you can keep your skills sharp EVEN WHEN YOUR NOT ABLE TO TRAIN WITH US.
You will learn to appreciate not only the legal ramifications of fighting to save innocent life, but the physiological and psychological ramifications that can and often do accompany a fight for life. More importantly, what that means for YOU - not just in the legal system - but throughout your entire life - if it’s not managed correctly. Because of this, you will learn what resources and tools are available to you locally that you need in order to manage and mitigate these stressors and limit your exposure.
HOW you will be trained: Our Combative Handgun Program goes well beyond typical, administrative state licensing courses and basic NRA-type training.
We do this by providing you with a unique training experience and support system which is presented and managed by Certified DSI Distributed Security Advisors (DSAs). Our DSAs have real-world experience in helping students achieve their firearms training goals and will give you personal attention and help you reach your full potential - before, during, and after your initial range training.
Why after your initial training? Because DSI knows what it takes to win a fight for life and what it takes to stay proficient and confident in your skills, therefore we don’t believe in, nor do we offer “one and you're done” type training where you're treated like so many cattle to be processed. Instead, DSI’s QC DSAs will ensure you have multiple training opportunities (both dry AND live fire) available to you as often as possible, and they will ALWAYS be there to answer your questions, support your training efforts to ensure you are achieving your training goals.
Three Phases of Training
DSI's training methodology is delivered in three phases in each module: 1) pre-course information and guidance, 2) intensive on-range gun-handling skills and drills, and 3) a post-course support system that’s been designed to keep you sharp with minimal effort and maximum enjoyment, all delivered by your very own DSAs who ensure you get what you need every step of the way.
Pre-course information, materials, including curricula, equipment lists, instructional drills and videos, manuals, photos fully customizable Individual Training Plans. All supporting materials, courses, and quizzes are provided prior to your course through our online training portal (the DSI Defense Academy). You will receive the DSI Training Notebook to help you better support your own self-paced training, no matter where it occurs and with whom it occurred. Our self-paced pre-course study material introduces you to key concepts and techniques - and you can get both guidance and answers to your questions directly from your DSA during his Weekly Live Pre-Course Q&A Briefs.
Miss your DSAs briefs or Q&As? No worries, we got you covered with supplementary briefs conducted by DSI HQ, doubling your opportunities to get your questions answered.
Range Training is fast-paced, dynamic, hands-on, and intensive. You will learn both practical gun-handling skills and life-saving tactical medicine by practicing them under the watchful eye of your DSAs who will show you step-by-step what needs to be done and then give you plenty of opportunities to practice by doing it yourself and building confidence in the techniques.
Because any needed "book learning" was done prior to your course inside the Defense Academy (DA), these precious 16-hours of range training can and are entirely devoted to learning and practicing the skills and techniques you are learning, leaving nothing to doubt.
There is no classroom time filled with PowerPoint presentations and long droning lectures during your range training. Instead, you will learn skills by the numbers, and practicing until you get it right, and then practicing more. Your instructors are respectful and friendly local professionals who are dedicated to helping you achieve your training goals, and are available to you long after you finish your course.
- Post-course, your DSA hosts a weekly Live Post-Course review/Q&A where you can get your questions answered directly while walking through the material at the same time. Through your continued enrollment in the DA, you will have access to regularly updated training materials, including curricula, equipment lists, instructional drills and videos, manuals with photos, and detailed descriptions. You will be tied into distributed security network via your own Private Training Group, or you can join an existing Private Training Group if you like. You will be the first to receive ongoing and challenging training opportunities as well as discounts. Most importantly, your DSA hosts thrice-weekly 30-minute Online Dry Practice Sessions where they will answer all of your self-training questions, help you sharpen your skills, and achieve your training goals between classes by using your fully customizable Daily Training Plan and your DSI Training Notebook.
The Combative Handgun Program is organized in four modules -- briefly described below -- which offer great flexibility in scheduling. For instance, you can complete the 16-hour range training in two consecutive, 8-hour days; you can take four, 4-hour modules over a period of one or more months; You can take eight 2-hour classes, or you can take 16 one-hour classes until you have completed the full 16-hr course. We prefer and highly recommend the latter format, as it allows you to rest and assimilate skill sets via your own private at-home dry practice sessions between your range sessions while also allowing you to integrate the online pre-course work with your progress through the range training. This makes for a thorough yet brisk training cycle.
Module-1 - Handgun BASICS includes the correct wearing of your equipment for your choice of EDC (Every Day Carry), begins ingraining safety habits and teaches you how to quickly establish a proper grip on your handgun so you can present (draw) confidently knowing you can control your handgun's recoil and deliver shots quickly and accurately. You will learn the proper technique for devastating practical combat accuracy using intuitive fire at immediate problem ranges (0 to 7-yards). You will learn how to deal with the most common reload you will be facing in a gunfight. You will be taught how to prevent and clear (fix) the most common type of malfunction most shooters struggle with. And you will learn how to quickly and safely maneuver to cover, and just as importantly, how to use your cover correctly (yes, there are correct ways to use cover).
Module-2 - Handgun SKILL BUILDER begins by testing the combative skills learned in Module-1, and then transforms your combative intuitive fire into highly effective combative sighted fire to deal with problems well beyond 5 to 7-yards. You will be given more reload options you can use prior to running your gun dry so you can keep fighting if you need to. You will learn how to safely and quickly present your handgun from concealment while you maneuver off the line of attack and to cover during a fight. You will learn how to quickly fix a lesser common malfunction that will tie up most untrained shooters. You will start shooting in low-light conditions, you will start learning how to apply tourniquets, pack wounds, and apply pressure dressings to control life-threatening bleeding that kills most people before the first responders can arrive to ply their skills, and you will learn how to read approach, and correctly open doors appropriate to the situation at hand (where permitted/available).
Module-3 - Handgun SKILL MASTERY tests all combative skills from the previous two modules and introduces you to more reloading options, and how to respond to and then interrupt your adversary's decision making process (Boyd's OODA Loop). You will start learning how to deal with multiple adversaries. You will learn how to ID and address targets in no-light conditions with a tactical light. You will be taught how to deal with open chest wounds and manage airways in order to save lives before EMS can show up and take over. You will develop speed and practical accuracy under all conditions, and you will learn (where available) how to stack the odds in your favor prior to making entry into a room, and then capitalizing on your advantage once you make entry. At the end of this course, you will have learned almost all of the basic gun-handling techniques needed to protect yourself in a lethal force environment and save innocent lives in the aftermath.
Module-4 - Handgun COMBATIVES: The course starts with the testing of the combative skills learned through modules 1-3 and then introduces engagement of close-contact targets and improvised shooting positions. You will shoot under time pressure at ranges from contact to 10 yards and more (facility dependent). You will integrate all combative skills under time and performance pressure, with ample trigger time under various lighting conditions. This final module will put a sharp edge on your ability to shoot quickly and accurately giving you confidence in your ability to not just survive but thrive - in and after a lethal force encounter. The course concludes with the Tier 4 Handgun Skills Test* which they can apply towards a Graduate Certificate. Rest assured, if you follow our advice and training you will find the test challenging yet achievable.
*Completing the Tier 4 series (or having demonstrated an acceptable equivalent level of competencies) allows you to take the DSI Tier 4 Handgun Skills Test (T4-HST). Students who pass the T4-HST with 80% or better, will earn a Certificate of Completion and when used in conjunction with the Certificate of Completion from their DSI online curricula students will earn the DSI Graduate Certificate.
